Project

In September 2022, TTS undertook a considerable project to construct a camp for BHP’s nickel mining operation in the remote the Ngaanyatjarra-Giles region of Western Australia.

Musgrave 4

Process

The West Musgrave copper-nickel mine is located 1,300km northeast of Perth and 1,400km northwest of Adelaide. Locally, Uluru is 500km east, and the Jameson (Mantamaru) community is within 30 kilometres.

This significant project aimed to support a workforce of 642 people, marking it as one of the major undertakings in an area that had never been mined before. The scope of work included developing 120 staff accommodation buildings, 12 laundries, a gym, a kitchen block, a recreation room, administration buildings, and a first aid centre.

The West Musgrave project presented unique challenges, from location and environmental to cultural complexities. Its placement in an area of cultural sensitivity required a thorough understanding and strict adherence to environmental and cultural protocols, including a zero-alcohol policy and minimising the ecological footprint.

Managing the logistics of material and staff sourcing in such an isolated location, along with dealing with the harsh environment populated by saltbush, and wild animals such as camels, and dingoes, demanded exceptional planning and flexibility.

Demonstrating adaptability, effective management, and leadership, TTS addressed these challenges head-on. Our contractors utilised temporary buildings and moved as construction progressed. This innovative approach allowed for continuous operation despite the logistical constraints.

The Result

The West Musgrave nickel project is a considerable achievement, underlining TTS's commitment to strategic project management, cultural sensitivity, and innovation in overcoming the hurdles of remote operations.

The initial phase of constructing the camp has been successfully completed, providing a full suite of facilities capable of housing and supporting a workforce of 642 individuals and continuing to provide camp maintenance on the ground. Client feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, highlighting TTS's role as a valuable partner in pioneering projects in untapped regions.

The success of this project marks a significant milestone for nickel mining in Australia and solidifies TTS's reputation as a leader in the construction and maintenance of remote camps, ready to face the challenges of Australia's harsh outback and beyond.
