Project

Between November 2023 and February 2024, TTS undertook a significant renovation project at the Kotti Doon camp in central Queensland.

Process

The renovation focused on a crucial upgrade of a dilapidated kitchen and involved extensive enhancements to the overall infrastructure of the existing camp to ensure durability and safety.

The project's challenges were manifold, primarily stemming from environmental and logistical impacts due to the remote location. High humidity, frequent encounters with dangerous wildlife such as brown snakes, and extreme heat significantly increased on-site risks and operational complexities. Integrating robust construction techniques was essential to align with existing structures while enhancing overall security and longevity.

To address the structural needs, TTS opted for a post-and-rail construction approach, a method involving embedding posts into the ground with rails laid across and the entire chassis welded to the building, ensuring maximum security and stability. Although it has a higher cost factor and requires more labour, this method was chosen to provide a permanent solution to the camp's infrastructural needs. Substantial concrete was used to fortify the construction further.

The project was carried out by a skilled team of six TTS staff, including specialist plumbers, electricians, carpenters, and a boilermaker. This team was intensively acquainted with the specific requirements of the camp's design, partly due to collaboration with ATCO structures from Brisbane, renowned for their expertise in robust structural solutions.

Safety protocols, especially concerning wildlife, were stringently adhered to, with a professional snake catcher on-site to manage the risks posed by the local snake population, thereby ensuring no delays or incidents impacted the schedule.

The Result

Despite the environmental challenges and complex requirements, the renovation at the Kotti Doon camp was completed efficiently within the set timeframe. The kitchen and the camp's enhanced structural integrity now meet contemporary safety and functionality standards, providing a secure and modernised facility.

This upgrade has significantly boosted the morale and safety of the camp's occupants, demonstrating TTS's commitment to delivering high-quality outputs regardless of the project's inherent challenges.

The comprehensive upgrade of the Kotti Doon camp underscores TTS's adeptness in managing and executing complex construction projects in challenging conditions. Through meticulous planning, adoption of advanced construction techniques, and prioritisation of safety, TTS delivered a solution that addressed the immediate needs and ensured the long-term sustainability and security of the camp's infrastructure.
